This is the story of the Mundhra family, initially focusing on Raj, whose father Janki Prasad Mundhra (Sanjeev Kapoor) is an aging widower coping with the pressures of modern life. He marries again to lead a comfortable life and fathered two children with young housewife Nandini (Rekha). As time passed by, Raj grows up and joins his father's company. However, he falls in love with right wing political activist Mandira Malik (Preity Zinta), marrying her without telling his parents about it. Meanwhile, his mother Nandini learns that she is destined for a major heart-attack and goes to a doctor. The doctor also informs her that she will die in 3 days, but her doctor friend suggests a risky surgery - a heart transplant. She agrees to it and before dying she tells Raj to be happy with Mandira as he will always be with him. Raj keeps his parents in the dark about his affair with Mandira and marries her. He soon finds out that Mandira was lying about her education and isn't really good at anything. He also finds out that she wasn't educated in Punjab and hasn't visited Punjab for six years. He confronts his mother, who tells him that Nandini had never told her about Mandira, but his father knew. He goes to meet with his parents and asks them to leave with him, humiliates them when they express their kind sentiments towards Mandira. Soon after, he gets an opportunity to go abroad and the family happily goes on a trip, leaving Mandira behind in-charge of their house in Mumbai. But Mandira convinces Raj to come with her and they both go back to the house. At this time Nandini's condition worsens and she is admitted in hospital. Raj at this point is more concerned about his mother and goes to the hospital. Nandini dies on the operating table after a successful heart transplant. Raj is devastated at this incident and returns home, where he finds his house being taken over by Mandira's family. He is shocked, but decides to go back to Mandira as their relationship was only a facade of love for Nandini and that she had been lying all along. He tells her that he knows she is only inspired from Ms. Gupta's life which makes her feel good about herself amidst her problems in real life. Raj says that she had used him completely and now has no choice but to leave him as she cannot control the consequences of her deeds. Raj decides to leave the house with his kids and goes to a hotel, where he has a slight encounter with Mandira's mother, who is now a womanizer. At this point, the movie goes back in the present time and we see Raj's life with his wife and kids. He is happy and peaceful about himself and family.
The film had received mixed reviews: "India Today" mentioned: "I'm glad that Preity Zinta finally got her due as an actress (at least that's what she says). Though the story may not be original...we've seen new variations on this theme of arranged marriage enough times to make our heads spin.
